Take a hike! A phrase often understood as an insult but is actually an incredible piece of advice. Take a hike, indeed, into the wilds of Wyoming.
Breathtaking natural beauty and diverse landscapes throughout the state of Wyoming pave the way for an incredible hiking experience. Home to several federally protected land spaces, including the world renowned Yellowstone and Grand Teton national parks, which sit near the Glamping on the Greys camp. There are endless amounts of hiking trails throughout the state, though. Each trail features stunning scenery, memorable wildlife interactions, and athletic terrain. No matter where a hiker chooses to embark, they are in for a memorable trip.
Hikers who visit Wyoming can choose between dozens of lodging options in the state. Most fall into two seemingly opposite categories: a hotel or a campsite. While each offers various benefits, they also come with inconveniences. Hotels in Wyoming range in style and price with varying amenities available to guests. Many offer modern luxury experiences, while others create a rustic and simple atmosphere. One thing most hotels have in common, though, is that many sit outside of the national forests in Wyoming. Hikers must travel into the mountains to find the best trail experiences available.
The national parks and forests do offer many camping sites for hikers who hope to immerse themselves deeper in nature. Campers typically use traditional tent equipment, along with portable stoves, showers, and other necessities they have packed. Those who choose to camp, though, are tasked with carrying this equipment through areas of the park and typically have to plan out their hiking routes, meals, and other important details ahead of time
To enjoy the conveniences of a hotel with the engagement of camping, try glamping! A glamping camp alleviates the need for carrying equipment long distances and then unpacking/repacking that equipment. It does not remove the campers from the forests they came to see, though. Glamp camps, like Glamping on the Greys, are nestled right in the picturesque mountains. This allows hikers to quickly access their routes without sacrificing hotel amenities.
The Grand Teton mountain range is filled with popular hikes of many varieties. Among the most popular are the Cascade Canyon Trail, Taggart Lake Trail, Amphitheater Lake Trail, and Static Peak Divide. Jenny Lake Trail, another popular option, is only a short distance from Glamping on the Greys! Some trails are strenuous backcountry treks and others are relaxing loops, but each offers a unique and memorable experience.
The Western border of Wyoming is an incredibly picturesque and mountainous region of the state. People often reach the area by traveling through Jackson, Wyoming, a bustling mountain town that is rich with culture and history. The town is only about 90 minutes from Glamping on the Greys, making it the preferred option for airline travelers. Jackson is largely known for its charming downtown space, filled with shops, restaurants, and museums. People from around the world travel to Jackson to enjoy both the in-town entertainment and breathtaking landscapes nearby. Hikers looking to enjoy the area should definitely plan a stop in Jackson.
Glamping on the Greys camp sits in the Teton National Forest, only steps away from dozens of renowned hikes and sites. Trailheads sit either in camp or just outside.
There are full-day hikes or half-day hikes available, depending on the hiker’s skill level and type of challenge they are seeking. Near camp, hikers will see deer, squirrels, countless birds, and meadows filled with colorful wildflowers. There may even be a mouse, elk, or bald eagle along the trail! Wildlife in this area of Wyoming is typically friendly. More dangerous animals, like bears or buffalo, typically live further north. We still advise hikers to respect an animal’s space by keeping a safe distance and any noise to a minimum.
The best hikes our campers enjoy near camp are:
Ridgeline Loop: A short two-mile loop that stretches around camp. Guests often begin their day with a walk along the trail, as it is easily accessible from our tents and kitchen.
Bailey Lake Hike: An easy 4.5-mile walk that stretches from Glamping on the Greys to Bailey Lake. This hike is very popular among guests who hope to take a swim in the lake and even bring a picnic lunch to enjoy by the water.
GreyBack Ridge Hike: A challenging trail with steep climbs, winding paths, thick forests and small meadows. Hikers can use several different trailheads to access the trail, each will bring a steep elevation climb of at least 7,000 feet.
The Glamping on the Greys does not host guided hikes, but our team members are experts on the hiking trails in and around the Teton National Forest. We will be happy to help teams plan out their perfect hiking trip, though! It is important to develop an itinerary and understanding of the region before heading to the trail. It may be hard to get cell phone reception or other communication in the forests or valleys, so pay close attention to our team’s suggestions and follow the maps closely.
Hiking is a beloved activity that offers numerous benefits and rewards to people of all ages and experience levels. It is a diverse sport that can be done in a wide variety of styles and across any type of terrain. There are many reasons to hike, typically including:
Physical exercise
Alone time or meditation
Connection with nature
Adventure
Community or social interaction
Photography
Wildlife viewing
Historic education
Regardless of the motivation, though, hiking trips are a unique outdoor activity enjoyed by millions.
It is important to pack the right gear while planning a hiking trip. Start with a checklist of the essential items:
We advise all guests to bring the above items with them to camp, though, as they are personalized to each hiker. Glamping on the Greys will pack meals or snacks for hikers who plan to eat on the trail. Please let us know if you need help obtaining any other equipment that is essential for a day on the trail.
Hiking is a great way to relieve stress, stay physically healthy, and make memories! A great hiking trip can quickly go south (figuratively) if certain rules and courtesies aren’t followed.
Be sure to research the terrain and wildlife in a particular region, be aware of weather conditions, and communicate your plans with someone staying back at camp. Be mindful of rules on certain trails or in parks and keep an eye out for abnormal trail conditions. When encountering other hikers on the trail, be respectful of their space and even share details about your hike so far!
Just as the hiker’s health and safety is important, so are the trails! Be respectful of the mountains and the beautiful natural environment. Minimize the impact of a visit as much as possible by packing all belongings, staying on designated trails, and NEVER leaving trash. Remember – leave no trace! Glamping on the Greys also provides many other outdoor activities.
