HORSEBACK RIDING VACATIONS

One of the best parts about being on any vacation is doing things that you don’t encounter in your day-to-day life – to live in someone else’s shoes for a bit. Especially Horseback riding!

“No hour of life is wasted that is spent in the saddle.

Winston S. Churchill

There is a very good reason why humans and horses have coexisted so harmoniously together for thousands of years. Horseback riding in Jackson, Wyoming, is a must-do because cowboys and jockeys alike will tell you that the best vantage point is always from atop the horse. There is, quite literally, no better way to let yourself soak in the incredible grandeur that is the Bridger-Teton National Forest or Yellowstone than by riding a horse through it. It’s the perfect backdrop for an unforgettable family vacation or group trip.

BEST HORSEBACK RIDING IN WYOMING

Wyoming is known to be one of the most beautiful places in the United States, and its sprawling mountain trails seem made to be explored by horseback. In addition to being a fantastic way to easily cover a lot of ground, horseback riding offers tremendous benefits for your body and soul. However, all rides are not the same and how your experience riding a horse goes depends on a number of factors. These include your safety, comfort, whether the pace of the ride is suitable to your experience level, having clear communication and direction from your guide, as well as things like the care of the animals involved.

Your guided ride should be lengthy enough to feel like an adventure but not so long that it becomes uncomfortable for you and the horse. Your guide should be extremely familiar with the geography of Jackson Hole, its terrain and other characteristics of the territory. Your guide should also be well-trained in dealing with potential problems that may arise while out on the trail. Learning how to use and pack a pack saddle is a skill that many experienced equestrians never have the opportunity to learn. You might even consider an overnight camping trek, which is truly a magical experience to share with your companions.

OVERNIGHT HORSEBACK RIDING TRIPS WYOMING

Many of our customers request something very unique compared to other horseback riding vacations. They want the chance to pack a horse and camp overnight in a new location alongside their horses, staring up at the night stars together as humans long ago did. An overnight horse riding trip starts at camp along the Greys River, where our guides help you saddle your horse and pack equipment and provisions onto a pack for the pack horse to carry. Then you’ll head out to a farther destination as a group, stopping for lunch before remounting to finally land at your destination where you will make camp, eat dinner cooked on the campfire, sing songs and enjoy each others’ company for the night. The following morning, you will enjoy a hearty breakfast before saddling up for the ride back to base camp.

HORSEBACK RIDING TRAIL RIDES

We have half-day rides and full-day rides, as well as the ability to trailer the horses for those who desire to go for a ride farther away from camp. We’re flexible and willing to accommodate whatever makes you happiest!

Those looking for a full day of riding will love the trek up to the top of Grey Back Ridge. With a 1,000-foot elevation gain at the peak, it offers breathtaking views of the Grand Tetons on a clear day. A more relaxed trail is the ride to Bailey Lake, where you can hop off and cast a line into the lake. There is also a rope swing that has been a huge source of fun and games for families. We have half-day rides to multiple viewpoints closer to camp that cater to both beginner and medium difficulty levels. Our easiest trail is a mellow, two-mile loop around the camp.  There are endless miles of trails to choose from in the area, so you will not be without places to explore. You won’t have to cover the same ground twice! Learn more about Horseback Riding with Glamping on the Greys.

PREPARING FOR A HORSEBACK RIDING VACATION

If you plan to ride horses on vacation, there are some things that help make sure the experience is comfortable for you. Here are some suggestions you may find helpful:

  • Well-fitting long pants like jeans or leggings with tall socks. Avoid things like hiking shorts with zip-on/off legs as the zipper spot could rub against your skin.
  • Boots with a heel are preferred for safety reasons, but any comfortable shoes (not sandals) will do.
  • A belt, fanny pack or clip-on phone cases are a good idea. It can be difficult to pull your phone out of your pocket easily while in the saddle. If your pockets are very deep, you’ll be reaching down to your thigh at an awkward angle to fetch it out, and if they are very shallow, your phone may fall out.
  • Backpacks/camelbaks are good for hiking/biking and riding at the walk, but at the trot or jog, they tend to bounce up and down, which can be rather annoying.
  • Wear layers that can be easily removed and packed away in a saddlebag. Avoid noisy fabric like windbreaker material, as this has been known to scare some horses. Our horses are what is known in the horse world as bombproof, meaning they are extremely difficult to frighten. They shouldn’t be frightened by this material, but it is still a good idea to avoid it when riding horses.
  • Wear sunscreen and sunglasses.
  • Helmet or hat, whichever you prefer.
  • Bring a reusable water bottle to carry with you in your saddlebag and stay hydrated.
  • If you aren’t used to it already, horse riding can use muscles that you might not even know you have. As with any new form of exercise, you might feel a tad sore after.
