FAMILY ACTIVITIES

1

The sky is literally the limit when it comes to deciding what to do on a camping trip. The beauty of glamping is that it frees up a lot more time and energy for family camping activities that you would not otherwise have during traditional camping. Instead of spending your time setting up camp, unpacking your equipment, and cooking and cleaning up meals, you’ll be spending it enjoying family activities and the nature that surrounds you.

Given that a large chunk of these “less fun” camping activities are off the table, you’ll want to come armed with plenty of fun ideas of what to do while camping together! Glamping in a private and remote area allows you to avoid the crowds of the big national parks that may detract from your experience. You’ll have the whole campground to yourself and will have the freedom to do whatever you want, whenever you want.

THINGS TO DO WHILE CAMPING

Nature hikes are a great way to explore the territory and open young minds to learning about the Earth and its ecosystems. Swimming is always a hit with the whole family, and there are plenty of places to take a refreshing dip around camp! Splash through the nearby streams or take a plunge into Bailey Lake with the rope swing.

Horseback riding is high on the list of family activities in Wyoming. We maintain a large herd of horses for our guests to ride and think that horse riding is the best way to experience the raw beauty of the Bridger Teton National Forest. We can arrange for half-day, full-day, or even pack or ATV rides for you and your family to enjoy.

If Wyoming had a state pastime, it would be fly fishing. The seemingly endless streams, rivers, lakes and reservoirs fed by the mountains of Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Park provide for some of the best fishing in North America. What better place to teach your young ones how to cast a line or lead more experienced anglers to some of the best fishing that can be had on Earth.

FAMILY CAMPING GAMES

Wondering how you might spend your time in between all of the hiking, horseback riding and fishing? There are tons of things to do while camping that both adults and kids can enjoy. Hone your photography skills, explore the trails on mountain bikes, capture the scenery with your art medium of choice, get lost in a novel, view some of Wyoming’s 400-plus bird species, and more.

Many of the fun camping activities that are for adults can also be enjoyed by teenagers and older children. Camping will allow you to connect with your family instead of your devices, and that’s a rare thing in today’s world where we are so reliant on technology for entertainment and are often all watching different shows on different screens (even when in the same room!). This is not to say that you should leave all the technology at home. If you’ve got a drone, you won’t want to leave it at home. Make epic videos of your family vacation that truly cover the vastness of your setting in the Bridger Teton National Forest.

Here are some fun family camping activities:

  • Scavenger hunt: This can be played many different ways. You can have themed scavenger hunts on each day. One day can be colors, another can be things that move, and another can be how many legs.
  • Camping songs: Make up hilarious lyrics to classic tunes you already know and have everyone join in the fun.
  • Musical chairs: Everyone can enjoy this classic and the winner may surprise you!
  • Crafting: Nature is full of materials that can be used to create exquisite arts and crafts projects.
  • S’mores: No camping trip is complete without the quintessential camping snack, the s’more!
  • Shadow puppets and campfire stories: Tell campfire stories and use shadow puppets to illustrate your tales.
  • Ball games: Pack a soccer ball, a football or some lacrosse sticks and play some family games together. Cornhole, darts, hacky sack, and frisbee are all fun camping games!

KID-FRIENDLY CAMPING ACTIVITIES

Glamping on the Greys offers plenty of fun family activities that will keep your young kiddos entertained. The only limit is your imagination. Camping will help foster a sense of adventure in your child and stimulate their imagination in ways that few things can rival. From the bottoms of the streams to the skies high above, Wyoming is filled with things to examine and behold, making it a playground for inquisitive minds, young and old. There are endless stones to unturn, games to make up and crafts to enjoy.

HOW TO MAKE CAMPING FUN FOR KIDS

  • Start a nature journal: Teach your kids about how journaling can preserve their memories by having them write a story or by chronicling their experiences and observations in a journal, just like the famous explorers and naturalists do.
  • Make mud masks: Make a mud paste and apply battle masks before fun family games. Let their creativity flow as they come up with their perfect look of fierceness. If you want each person to paint their own mask, make sure to bring a mirror. But it could be even more fun to have people do each other’s masks.
  • Bring some crafts to make Hapa Zome, a Japanese method of coloring cloth by bashing flower petals into it.
  • Collect wildflowers for a nature collage: Encourage your kids to try to find something to represent each of the colors in the rainbow.
  • Leaf paintings: Apply some paint to leaves and make imprints on a sheet of paper. Encourage the kids to find leaves of varying shapes and sizes, or use other objects like rolling a pinecone or and acorn.
  • Nature boats: Make a floating boat out of sticks, twigs and leaves and watch it set sail into the water. Tell the kids stories about how our ancestors and other brave explorers navigated the high seas on similar vessels, like on the Kon-Tiki expedition.

Some Extra Things You Might Want to Bring

  • Magnifying glass for examining small bugs, leaves and things found underneath stones
  • Non-toxic washable paints for making rock art. It’s important not to leave a trace, so make sure that whatever you paint is washed away prior to your departure.
  • A bucket and shovel for making nature soup and storing prizes. Print out “nature soup” recipe cards here.

CAMPING GAMES FOR TODDLERS

Keeping toddlers entertained is crucial to the harmony of your group. Fortunately, as toddlers are so new to the world, they can usually be entertained without a lot of fuss. Toddlers mostly just want to be included in what the older kids are doing. Though you need to keep a closer eye on them, camp is a great place for toddlers to do what they do best: get dirty and make a mess!

  • Create digging games, encouraging them to act as an archaeologist, collecting rocks and categorizing them however they see fit.

  • Allow them to help unpack things, though there isn’t nearly as much to unpack with glamping, they can still unpack their clothes.

  • Paint faces and make stick artwork.

  • Teach them all about the different trees and animals near camp and on hikes.
