Though it isn’t legal to operate off-road vehicles such as ATVs or side-by-sides within the boundaries of the Grand Teton National Park or Yellowstone National Park, if you’re looking to explore the jaw-droppingly beautiful wilderness of Wyoming with your hand on a throttle, you won’t be disappointed. There are so many exhilarating Jackson Hole ATV and side-by-side trails to ride through. So many that you could ride for days on end without covering the same tracks twice!
Touring Jackson Hole with an ATV or a side-by-side is a fantastic way to explore the scenic wildlife and natural landmarks in the area. Togwatee Pass or Shadow Mountain near Jackson are popular places for ATV riding. In the nearby town of Alpine, you can explore a labyrinth of trails along the Greys River.
Side-by-side tours are great for families and people looking for a bit more vehicle around them. This does not mean that side-by-sides are in any way tamer than ATVs – they are wicked agile, and their wider wheelbase and supple suspension give them the ability to climb terrain with a finesse that could put a bighorn sheep to shame.
The Grays River Ranger District near Glamping on the Greys has a number of trailheads where ATV use is authorized and the trails are wide enough for side-by-sides. This includes the Murphy Squaw Motorized Trailhead, the North Fork Trailhead, and the Trail Creek Trailhead – Greys River.
No one knows Jackson Hole ATV and side-by-side trails better than the locals. To ensure that you find the trails you are looking for and end up on ones that match your ability level, it’s worth considering having an experienced guide. The land here is rugged and raw, and while you may be perched on a piece of modern machinery that can make quick work of most trails, exploring the wilderness and the steep mountain trails here comes with risks. Having someone who knows the lay of the land like the back of their hand is extremely useful in an area as expansive and wild as Jackson Hole and the surrounding Grand Teton mountains.
Looking to go on an ATV or side-by-side adventure in Jackson Hole but don’t own or didn’t bring your ATV? No problem! Typically, no prior experience is required for embarking on Jackson Hole ATV tours. You will receive instructions during the process of renting the vehicle. All that is required is a valid driver’s license. The cost is usually around $185 or $300 for either a full or half-day rental. Off-road tours are best enjoyed well after the snow has melted and most of the trails are open as early as the beginning of June and remain open until the end of November. Jackson Hole ATV and side-by-side trails are incredible to ride on and it’s a very popular thing to do here. Because of this popularity, we highly recommend making reservations in advance to avoid encountering a situation where all the vehicles have been sold out. ATVs are typically less expensive to rent than 2- or 4-person side-by-sides and may have more limited availability, so again, make sure that you book well in advance.
The various rental places in Jackson and Alpine have different age requirements, so make sure you check in advance what they are before making your reservation for the participating parties in your group.
With such a tremendous range of places to explore and activities to enjoy in Jackson Hole, it can be hard for a visitor to know how to prioritize their limited window of time in Jackson. For those interested in riding ATVs or side-by-sides, there are some fantastic trails around Jackson Hole and the surrounding areas like Star Valley and Alpine.
Many of the trails are open seasonally, so be sure to check and make sure they are open when you plan your trip. Many of the roads are accessible only to street-legal ORVs and these must be outfitted with a license plate, turning signals, and headlights per Wyoming State Law.
Squaw Creek Trail (Alpine): Open from July 1 to November 1, this intermediate trail can be accessed via the Greys River Road, approximately 4 miles upriver from Alpine.
Mosquito Creek: Accessed via Fall Creek Road, a mere 4 miles south of Wilson, this area contains 12 miles of trails that permit ATVs.
Shadow Mountain: Over 11 miles of off-road trails that provide panoramic mountain views and idyllic meadows blooming with wildflowers.
There are places where you can rent ATVs to explore the areas around Yellowstone National Forest, but most find that the trails around Grand Teton, Jackson and Alpine are more suited to exploring by off-road vehicle. Few would argue that Alpine and Jackson Hole ATV and side-by-side trails are some of the best in the state of Wyoming.
